Outskirts Press Announces the Release of New Historical Fiction: Joachim: The Heretic by M.L. Stainer

March 28, 2017 – Denver, CO and Roanoke, VA – Outskirts Press announces the release of Joachim: The Heretic, in which the Jewish explorer Joachim Gans is tried as a heretic. Set in the latter part of the 1500s, this new historical fiction novel follows on the heels of the popular Joachim’s Magic by M.L. Stainer.

[Joachim: The Heretic] Joachim: The Heretic continues the story of Joachim Gans, chief metallurgist to Queen Elizabeth I, and his apprentice, Reis Courtney, upon their return to England. Joachim is given a grant to process saltpeter and goes to Bristol, but trouble begins at a local inn. Joachim, a Jew, is confronted about his religious beliefs. Denying Jesus Christ as the Son of God, he is subsequently taken to trial for blasphemy and heresy.

Joachim says, “What need hath God to have a Son? Is He not Almighty?” Not knowing what to do with him, the judge sends him on to London to continue the trial by the Queen's Privy Council—whose members have invested heavily in Joachim’s project. They eventually free him. After a brief time in Wales, where prejudice still follows him, Joachim returns to his native Bohemia. Reis, loyal to his master, stands by him during the trial and after. Finally, Joachim leaves Reis to work at the horse farm of a wealthy gentleman, carving out a new life for himself.

The sixteenth century is brought into vivid focus in this timeless tale of prejudice and bigotry, religious intolerance and steadfast loyalty. Young adults and adults will find Joachim’s story fascinating, as he is a little-known figure in American colonial history. Joachim: The Heretic also shines a light on prejudice against the Jews, which has existed for centuries and is still prevalent in today’s world. An equally important theme concerns the mentor-mentee relationship, that of teacher and student, of father-figure and son. Other important characters in the novel include Thomas Hariot, famed mathematician, Sir Walter Raleigh, explorer, and Queen Elizabeth I, who encouraged exploration.

Considered an outstanding historical novel on many levels, Joachim: The Heretic would make an excellent addition to any collection.
